Below, we’ll teach you exactly how you can repair sagging rattan furniture and how it can be reinforced to prevent it from happening in the future.

Is your rattan furniture looking a little different?

Unfortunately, no matter how much money we spend on furniture, it’s not going to look as good as new forever. This holds true for rattan furniture too and it’s likely that you’re going to need to reshape and reinforce it at some point in its lifespan.

Why does rattan start to sag?

Rattan strands stretch over time and this can cause them to start to sag. This happens for both natural and synthetic rattan, although the issue is more prominent for natural rattan. The combination of weight, heat and potential exposure to the elements can cause the material to expand and contract, resulting in its reshaping.

How To Reshape Sagging Seats

If your rattan garden furniture seat is only sagging slightly then this should be an easy fix. If it has completely lost its shape then it may be a little more difficult to reshape.

Below are the steps you can take to reshape the seat on your wicker furniture:

  1. Apply tepid waterto the area using a spongeand leave to dry for 24 hours.
  2. The water should cause the strands to shrink back to their usual shape. Once you have reshaped the rattan it is very easy to ensure the strand stays taut.
  3. Every month use a plant mister to spray the furniture. Ensure to give each strand a light but even coating. It is important for the seats to stay taut so they are able to evenly distribute the weight.

If your furniture is designed to be used with no cushions, your chairs will have easy support. This will help to evenly distribute the weight and prevent sagging.

If you have done this and the sagging is still excessive you may need to use more cushions. Alternatively, you can replace the chair from the set but this is best to be avoided!

How to reinforce wicker chair seat

There are a number of things you can do to reinforce your rattan patio furniture. First, make sure to repair any sections where the wicker has come loose. You can do this using high-quality glue, gently sticking the strands back where they belong. Check out our blog post on repairing broken strands of synthetic rattan here. This will help to strengthen the chair and keep it looking good.

Next, if you need to reinforce it further, you can try supporting the frame with extra pieces of wood. Only do this if your rattan furniture is old and is in dire need of reinforcement. Ideally, you’d purchase a new set at this point, but, in case you really want to try and reinforce it enough to continue using it, support the frame by adding a few pieces of wood to the frame to support it.
