Why won’t my Xbox One read discs? This also happens caused by a software update, the disc itself, or an issue with the console. If you’re not sure what’s causing the problem, follow the troubleshooting steps below to fix it.
Why Won’t My Xbox One Read Discs?
Your Xbox might not recognize certain games for a variety of reasons, including disc or console damage. The most common problems are:
Hidden Dirt
Your Xbox can become clogged with hair, dust, or debris. This can lead to disc errors, internal-component malfunctions, and disc failures. The most important component of your Xbox is the laser lens. If it becomes dirty, it will not be able to read a disc properly and will need replacement.
Dirty Disc
Over time, dirt and dust can build up on the surface of your game disc. A thin layer of dirt or dust can cover a part of your game disc, causing the console’s disc reader to not be able to read the entire data.
Foreign Objects
Sometimes, coins, toys, and paperclips can be mistakenly placed inside a console, causing damage to the disc drive.
Defective Hardware
Your system’s age could play a role in disc-reading issues with your Xbox. It will not work as it once did if there are any broken parts.
Settings
Although it is rare, the Xbox power settings may cause disc drive problems. Instant-on power mode allows faster start-ups and voice activation. It can prevent some consoles from reading or recognizing discs.
The Disc Is Incompatible (not from the same region).
PAL and NTSC are the two formats that earlier Xbox 360 consoles employ in their game discs. Fortunately, Xbox One consoles are not region-locked, so if you live in North America, your console should still be able to read titles purchased in other regions.
However, if you’re having trouble using Blue-Ray discs or DVDs, incompatibility may still be an issue. It’s most likely due to disc coding if your Xbox One console plays games fine but won’t play a specific DVD or Blu-Ray disc. Because not all Blu-ray discs are encoded to play in every region, your system may be unable to read them.
Ensure that you only utilize Blu-Ray discs purchased in the same region as your system.
How To Fix Xbox Disc Errors
Seek Damage
Examine the disc from both sides. Do you see any scratches, smudges or cracks on the disc? Listen to the disc being inserted and see if the disc rattles or spins in the disc drive.
You should inspect the console. Did it get dropped on the floor or knocked over by someone? It may have been dropped or knocked over.
Clean the Components
After inspecting the parts for any damage, it is important to clean out all dirt and grime from your disc drive. To do this, you will need the following items:
- A microfiber cloth
- A soft-bristled brush
- One can of compressed air
- A bottle of rubbing alcohol
Clean the disc drive of dust: Use the microfiber cloth or microfiber paper to clean the area around it. Use the soft-bristled toothbrush to clean the area around the disc drive tray (or opening) or to blow out any difficult-to-reach dust.
Clean any residue from the disc using the microfiber cloth. To remove any sticky spots, you can use a little rubbing alcohol on the cloth. However, it is important to allow the disc to dry completely before inserting it back into your device.

Test Another Disc
You might try inserting another DVD into your Xbox One. Are you having the same issues? Check to see if the discs work on another console. Sometimes a Blu-Ray Disc(r), or a game, won’t work if they were purchased in a different area than your console.
Update and Restart Your Xbox One Operating System
Sometimes software errors can prevent your discs from being played. If this happens, you may need to update your console. It’s easy to do:
Check Status and storage
To check if the network’s services have been down, go online to Xbox Status to find out how much storage you have. Here’s how:
- To open the guide press the Xbox button on the controller. Next select Profile & System.
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Install Updates
Check your hard drive for software updates. It’s easy:
- Verify that your Xbox is connected to the internet.
- To open the guide press the Xbox button on the controller. Next select Profile & System.
- Open Settings > System > Updating to make and check for updates to your console.
- Restart the system
After your Xbox has been updated, you can restart it. This can resolve a number of problems. To turn on your device, press and hold the Xbox button for 10 seconds. Then press the button again. Make sure that you are signed in to the correct Xbox account when it turns on.
Change Power Modes and Power Cycle the Xbox One Console
If your game disc isn’t being recognized, try changing the power mode and restarting the system. Here’s how you can do it:
Step 1: To open the instructions, press the Xbox button on your console.
Step 2: Go to System > Settings > Power & Startup > Power mode & Startup and follow the on-screen instructions.
Step 3: Select Energy-saving from the Power mode & startup window.
Step 4: To do a hard power cycle, hold down the X button on your console for 10 seconds. Press the Xbox button to restart the console once it has completely shut down.
Step 5: Re-insert your disc and wait a few seconds to see whether the Xbox One not reading disc problem has been repaired.
Check Out the Xbox Game Generation
You should verify compatibility before you put older discs into your device. You can read some older Xbox 360 games on your newer console. Not all games can be used. You should check the Xbox disc generation. Check out the list of backward-compatible games to see if your particular game will work.
Reposition Your Console
The Xbox One not reading disc error could potentially be caused by the console’s position. Because the console was not designed to function in a vertical position, you should place it horizontally on a stable and flat surface to improve disc drive performance.
You can play the game again after relocating the console to check if the problem persists.
Reset Your Xbox Console
Resetting your console is an option if none of the above methods have worked. Make sure to back up your Xbox before you start. Select the Reset and Keep My Games & Apps option. This will only remove corrupted system files. Your data and games will not be affected. How to reset your Xbox One
- To open the guide press the Xbox button on the controller. Next select Profile & System.
- Open Settings > System > Console info.
- Select Reset console > Keep my apps and games. The selected content will be erased by your device.
